FAQs

  • How much does a psychologist cost in Australia?

Session fees vary depending on the practitioner, their qualifications and the length of the session. If you’re eligible for a Medicare rebate, your out-of-pocket cost may be lower. Bobbi helps you compare fees, rebates and availability before you choose who to contact.

  • What is a Mental Health Care Plan?

A Mental Health Care Plan is prepared with your GP and may make you eligible for Medicare rebates on a set number of sessions with an eligible mental health professional. Your GP can explain whether a plan is right for you and how it works.

  • What happens after my rebated sessions?

Once you’ve used the rebated sessions available to you, you may need to pay the full session fee. Talk with your GP and practitioner about your options, and ask each practice about its full fees as well as the rebated cost.

  • Are telehealth mental health appointments available?

Many practitioners offer telehealth appointments by video or phone, while others see clients in person or offer both. Bobbi shows each provider’s appointment options so you can compare.

  • Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?

You can generally book with a psychologist privately without a referral. A Mental Health Care Plan or referral from your GP is usually needed to claim a Medicare rebate. Psychiatrists generally require a referral.

  • Can I compare psychologists near me?

Yes. Bobbi helps you compare mental health providers based on your location, along with factors such as fees, rebates, availability and appointment options.

  • What should I look for when comparing mental health providers?

Useful things to compare include session fees, whether a Medicare rebate may apply, the type of practitioner, availability, telehealth or in-person options and the areas each practitioner works with.

  • Is Bobbi a mental health service?

No. Bobbi is a comparison service. We don’t provide therapy, crisis support or clinical advice. If you need to talk to someone now, call Lifeline on 13 11 14, any time of day or night. In an emergency, call 000.
